I found 75 Chestnut by chance because I was asked by my boyfriend to pick a restaurant for us to go to for a date night (dinner) before a party we were going to attend in the area. Gorgeous and cozy atmosphere, but with a very unenthusiastic / not very friendly hostess and equally not very friendly waitress...however, it did make up for it with the food. We got Calamari as an appetizer; which was only ok; I got the Tenderloin au Poivre, which was very good but I wish there was more of the peppercorn brandy cream sauce making the meal a bit dry. The Tenderloin had good flavor and they give you a decent to small amount of tenderloin. My boyfriend got the Filet Mignon, which I expected to be a thick piece of Filet, however it was a thin Filet, which was overcooked and only ok. Truly disappointing. We ended the meal with the Creme Brulee Tasting which was probably the highlight of the meal as we got to taste 3 delicious Vanilla, Chocolate and Passionfruit Creme Brulees. Overall, it wasn't bad, but not amazing. I found it a bit disappointing after as I was really looking forward to coming - making a reservation super far in advance, and probably a place I won't end up coming back to. read more

Hidden gem! An absolutely welcoming neighborhood spot. We had a reservation for a party of 5 with a last minute change to 7 - and they were most accommodating!! Cocktails were lovely & refreshing, there was something for everyone on the menu. Shared apps included the calamari & charcuterie platter & mediterranean platter, delish! Dinners included steak & avocado salad ravioli and fish & chips - which were all hit. The service was very good - we were well tended to. Our group lingered a while over coffee - and we were not made to feel rushed in any way. There was seasonal outdoor seating - not ideal for our size group - but the indoor a/c was welcome on a toasty July eve... (and there is a bar/tv scene but it was not intrusive to our dining experience). Seems like a cozy spot in the winter! We'll be back!! read more

The chicken sausage pasta had good flavor - really loved the little squash pieces in it - but the chicken was dry. The fries for the fish&chips were a little bland and sad. Overall, there wasn't anything too special about the food, especially for the price, but I would come again to try the drinks, brunch menu, or for the ambience. Our server was very nice and accommodating though. When we told her secretly that it was our friend's birthday, she presented the molten chocolate cake with a candle and scoops of whipped cream & ice cream and took the order off the check. All in all, we had a good time and good conversations. I would just say to CHECK THE BILL because three of us ordered the chicken sausage pasta, which on the menu said $24.90, but we were charged $32.95/dish. The ravioli itself was very undercooked (not just al dente) but everything else I've gotten has been really delicious, so I think it was a one-time thing. The service is usually great and always friendly. They usually run out of menu items which can be disappointing, since I like to look at the menu before going but that's not their fault. Came here on a Saturday night with a friend. The restaurant itself was super cute and cozy with dim lighting and a pretty extensive menu. The food was not as pricey as I was expecting for how nice of a restaurant it is, which was nice. FOOD: My friend ordered the Marinated Tenderloin Tips, which she said was alright. I, on the other hand, was thoroughly disappointed by the Atlantic Cod Filet that I ordered. It was pretty bland and tasteless and the beans were undercooked. Do not recommend that dish. 75 Chestnut is a nice, local spot in Beacon Hill, and we really enjoyed our dinner here. It's slightly pricy, but on par with other places in the area. The drinks were great - we had an excellent Old Fashioned, and while we passed on the wine, the wine list was also pretty impressive. I had the pumpkin ravioli (which is actually butternut squash, according to the description), and I loved it. It was heavily seasoned with nutmeg and other similar spices, but lovely for a winter meal. Others in our group had the steak and avocado salad, which in reality was a large steak with a side salad. My husband had the fish and chips, which were excellent. Really, the only disappointing part of the meal was dessert. We had the chocolate trio, but in the future, I'd really only recommend the creme brûlée. The chocolate creme brûlée was excellent, but I did not like the chocolate and almond soup or the brownie. The brownie in particular seemed extremely heavy on the egg (not only from a texture standpoint...I also could actually taste egg when eating it). The only thing that bothered me is that the hostess told us we had the table for an hour and a half making me feel like we had to keep a pace to eat and leave the seat for the next reserve. Went here for brunch the day before Mother's Day. Located in a quiet quaint spot in beacon hill. Great staff and attentive service. For a quaint but pricey restaurant settled in Boston's historic neighborhood of Beacon Hill, this restaurant is underwhelming to say the least. If the prices were 25% cheaper, then I'd leave a 3 star review, but for entrees nearly $30, I expect much better. We had a reservation for 7, and 2 of us arrived on time before the other 5 who were running a little late. The hostess gave us an ugly look when we first walked in, as if we did not belong in the establishment. After explaining we had a reservation, she grunted us to our assigned table, and only after I looked back at her did she tell us it was OK for us to sit at our table until the others arrived. The rest of our party arrived just a few minutes after and we decided to order an appetizer, the 75 Chestnut Tower and the Winter Flatbread, priced at $28 and $20, respectively. For dinner I ordered the Salmon entree with orange butter sauce. When the tower came out, it was surprisingly small. The garlic bread looked like something a 1st grader would make--white bread with cheese melted on it with little garlic flavor. The calamari was good but there was maybe 10-12 total pieces of squid. The mushroom ravioli was also good but I think they gave us just 3-4 pieces. These 3 items aren't particularly expensive and the rest our party was quite shocked at how little there was in a $28 appetizer called the 75 Chestnut "Tower". My wife and I had supper here a couple of nights ago after dithering endlessly about where to go in the area. We weren't disappointed. We made a late Open Table reservation and were quickly seated when we got in. A waiter was by with water and a request for our drink order right away. They did a fine job with basic Manhattans and get points for having brandy available for my wife's Brandy Manhattan. (Several places in Boston have not had brandy available for these.) I ordered the clam chowder and the crab cakes. Both were quite good. The chowder was rich and flavorful and came in a bowl that looked small but actually held quite a bit of soup. The crab cakes were of the softer, crab-filled type rather than the firmer type that often don't have that much crab in them. Texture-wise, I can see that being a little yucky for some people but I don't mind it and the flavor was good. They came with a simple cucumber and caper salad that was wonderful. My wife ordered the tenderloin tips, which were excellent. They were cooked exactly to her medium-rare specification and extremely flavorful after some kind of long marinade. The place comes off as a good neighborhood restaurant and bar with a casual vibe and nice outdoor seating. It's a bit noisy indoors but no worse than most other casual dining places these days. The only knock on the place for me is the wine list. Short and wildly unimaginative, it needs a major upgrade. Food this good should be offered with wine that can complement it well and there just wasn't much of interest on their list. We would have ordered a bottle but the food came out quickly enough that we still had plenty left in our cocktail glasses and there was nothing that we really wanted on the list, anyway. First - I don't know why Yelp list this as not kid friendly, they have a dedicated kids menu. Seems pretty kid friendly to me. I guess if you lack parenting skills and your kid(s) an unruly jerk who you let run free, the 'Not Kid Friendly' rating is aimed squarely at you. On to the service: Amazing. Even on a busy evening they were extremely accommodating and found space for myself and two elementary aged kids. The service as a whole was more akin to what one would expect from a much pricier establishment. I mentioned my daughter loved the vegetables that came with my plate and they brought a side of vegetable for her. The food: the filet was like butter. No pressure on the knife to cut it and it melted in my mouth. As mentioned, the vegetables were cooked perfectly (just a little bite to them). I will return here anytime I'm in Boston. read more

BRUNCH REVIEW 75 Chestnut is a beautiful, quaint restaurant tucked into Beacon Hill and has all the elements to be a great spot, but the food items and service just didn't deliver. We came on Saturday during brunch, and they had a special where if you ordered an appetizer and an entree, your table could decorate their own gingerbread house! They gave you the gingerbread house assembled, and there was a separate bar of candy toppings available to decorate your house. This was ideal for children and groups of girls for brunch. They also had a Bloody Mary bar at the bar, so that you could add your own garnishes. They seem to have a lot of events like this going on, so if you plan on coming here you might want to see what the specials are. However, the food just really wasn't good. 75 PARFAIT: I was intrigued that the parfait would be served in a martini glass. But really, all it meant was that the portion would be much smaller. The yogurt was nothing special, the raisins were very chewy and dry, and it was like any parfait you could get at a grocery store. FISH & CHIPS ($19.95): They don't list prices on their menus, so let me start by saying this was $19.95. PLEASE DO NOT ORDER THIS. The fish looked like something you would take from the frozen section of a supermarket. The outside was not crispy at all, and almost stale. The coleslaw had no flavor and a little sour, so I didn't even touch it. The french fries were good so I filled myself on fries for brunch, basically. Service really lacked throughout our meal. They forgot to replace my friend's home fries with side salad, didn't bring tartar sauce with my fish&chips, and did not bring butter & jam for my friend's toast. I don't use this word lightly, but I am obsessed with 75 Chestnut. I found it when I was in Boston for work in April as I was on a run, and I came by that night. It was fantastic. I was just in Boston for a week for work and I went by 2 TIMES. That's how strongly I feel for the restaurant. It's so cozy and the service is excellent, and they're are a bunch of specials each night. I swear by the Nantucket Seafood Stew. It's really generous pieces of cod and swordfish; shrimp, mussels, scallops in a beautiful tomato broth. The ambiance of the restaurant make you feel at home. There's a great little cheese and cracker platter when you walk in. If I lived in Boston, I would want to be a local here night in and night out. read more

Went to 75 Chestnut earlier this year, for an impromptu dinner. Although it was during restaurant week, we walked in having no idea that they were participating and it wasn't until we sat down and saw both the regular menu and the RW one that we noticed it. I glanced at both and figured that the restaurant week one had enough options for me to check it out and be worthwhile. The waiter promptly arrived, giving us a brief description of some noteworthy items on the menu and to bring us some bread and water. I couldn't help but to notice the decor in the place. It was extremely cozy and inviting in there. Very nice, with dark wood tones everywhere. Nice but not upscale and instead casual and very 'Beacon Hill-lish'. I really like it a lot. Being so late, a few tables were already empty but quite a few customers remained inside. Yet it was very quiet. Yes, I remember that very well, the place was very quiet. The bar was fully stocked and they had a television which was set to display an aquarium screensaver, which was kind of weird but kind of cool at the same time. Then came the moment to order. I settled for a simple yet delicious salad to start, which was very well dressed and quite tasty. Then came a classic but yet perfectly cooked steak frites. The meat was juicy, seasoned and cooked to a perfect medium and portioned just right. The fries were also quite good. And then the best part of the meal, the dessert, which in this case was a trio of chocolate desserts: chocolate crème brûlée, chocolate cake and a this pana cotta-like chocolate gel that was in cup and was marvelous, and served warm which was exciting and surprising. My dining companion and I had a marvelous meal there, the staff was very friendly and the location of the place is charming. I look forward to returning there in the future for another solid meal, but this time, will be ordering at la carte instead of their RW menu. It is off the beaten path and yet still very accessible and is a testament that there are still a few hidden gems are still present in that area. This is definitely one of them. Three stars: I know!!! I was disappointed! I had such great expectations for this place, I felt like a squirrel who had just found her nut, but the visit was sort of nutty. I had this as a bookmarked place to try for a while and the chance came up on a 90 degree night when I didn't feel like cooking. I had seen the reviews, they are true. 75 Chestnut has nice atmosphere, good solid a-ok food (beef tenderloin, mashed with asparagus) and walking distance from the train. The food was good. I can't say 'do not go here', give it a try. But let me give you a bit of advice and this is where the missing stars fell off the chart. Do not sit at the bar at 5pm on a quiet night alone because you will hear the conversations between the staff. One was actually talking about a medical problem, a cyst that needed to be drained. I was dumb struck. Was I invisible, did they not realize and know I was eating. Gross! I also know that one of the other staff members is being dragged into court on child support and then my favorite, the f-bomb was used not just once but enough so that I actually considered counting them, it was a lot. I'm not saying don't go, the staff members interactions with me were very nice but they need to realize customers can hear them talking to each other. Go to the back room please. I ate and left, I could not wait to finish my meal and leave. I took half of it home, I couldn't listen anymore. I couldn't decide whether to call the manager or not. I hope the management does read this so they know. I have nothing against collegial conversations between staff but I do not think this has ever happened to me before in a restaurant semi-upscale in Boston. I was dumbstruck. If 'the talking' hadn't happened and I had come with friends, sat away from the bar and not heard the conversations 75 Chestnut would have gotten 4 stars, very true. But all I wanted to do from the time I arrived (after they nicely said hello) to the time I left was to tell the man behind the bar who swears and has a cyst, please stop talking! During the three years I lived in Beacon Hill, this was my favorite place. More than any other restaurant in Boston, it makes you feel like you're somewhere far away, warm and cozy, in a ski lodge or a cabin in the woods. Right when you walk inside, there is a complimentary cheese and cracker tray. I almost always made my way to the the high tops across from the bar. Then you're greeted by the friendliest servers around. The drink list includes some great wines, a nice choice of beers, and lots of infused alcohols. The food is fantastic, especially the tenderloin tips, and if you split anything, it comes out in individual portions. Even the brunch is fun and includes a bloody mary bar. There are all kinds of events during the week, such as cookie night where the chefs try out new cookie recipes, and even gingerbread house night where you can make your own. 75 Chestnut is a perfect neighborhood restaurant. My only complaint is the Tabouli advertised has little to no parsley, and was more a cous cous based version. I had the seafood stew, which definitely did not skimp on the fish/shrimp/scallops and the veggies were cooked thoroughly. The broth was a little oily for my liking. The lady had the filet mignon, and it was delicious. Packed a good kick afterwards. The martinis were superb. Had two spicy and dirty martinis and I would get them again. We stopped in after a 5 hour car ride at 9:30PM on a Friday and were seated immediately. We were happy to find that it was Boston's restaurant week and chose to dine from the select menu. He got a watermelon mojito and I got a Boston sunset which was delectable after being(sober) in the car for so long. Beware-I didn't see prices on the menu and the drinks are about $15 each. I did the BLT ice berg salad which was delicious. My boyfriend was jonesing for some clam "chowda" and this place delivered! Then we did the chicken, mozzarella, basil, tomato pasta which was HUGE and very well executed. The portions were gigantic compared to our other restaurant week experiences in NYC. Dessert was off the hook. The restaurant week menu only had their triple chocolate dessert on it but our waitress let us pick from the full menu. The boyfriend got the bittersweet brownie sundae which is served WARM! Doesn't get much better. But it actually does at this restaurant. I did the berry cheesecake creme brûlée and I can honestly say it's one of the best deserts I've ever had! So happy we found this place on Yelp. Go give it a try! read more

I was wandering around Boston, and found myself in Beacon Hill, and peered down this little side street to see a few businesses peeking out amongst mostly resident buildings. I was looking for just the right place to sit, have a simple meal, and write in my journal, and I found it. I ordered a chardonnay and the avocado salad off the specials menu. The salad was yummy - a spinach bed with cucumbers, goat cheese, tomatoes and pecans. I could have gone for a little more lemon and a few more pecans... But I'm being picky - à chacun son goût. It was mostly empty when I got there. The hostess was talking to one of the few customers. The conversation endured while I waited to be seated. I should have helped myself to some cheese and crackers while I was waiting. The place definitely has ambiance. It's cozy. The service was very correct. I think I'd just finished uttering "salad" when they had delivered it to my table. I would have liked to linger and write longer after my meal, but then I think they would have wanted me to either order another drink or pay rent... They were getting busy, so I went on my way. 75 Chestnut is one of those restaurants you could easily walk right by without realizing it's a business. Tucked into a residential block in the beautiful Beacon Hill area, this restaurant was the setting for my friend Albert W.'s recent birthday dinner. I wound up arriving about a half hour early (around 8pm) on a Saturday night. To say the place was exploding would be an understatement. Every table was packed, the bar was so full you couldn't even stand at it without accidentally smacking someone. As my girlfriend and I stood there, I got to take a good look at the restaurant. With dim lighting, wood here and there and just the right amount of items hung on the walls, it has a warm, welcoming feel with a touch of sophistication. Eventually I got to order a drink at the bar and I was impressed that as soon as I asked "What bourbons do you have?" I didn't get a blank stare followed by a helpless look over the shoulder. Instead, the bartender told me right away what they had. I went for a Bulleit on the rocks. The drink was smooth, deep and they didn't hold back on the serving. Soon our table was ready so I went over to sit down. I noted with some amusement that I passed a tri-level plate setting with crackers and cheese. Yes I took a couple, and yes it was good! Our waiter for the evening was a true pro and handled himself very well all night long. We never felt neglected and it must have been daunting taking care of our table of about ten people while handling his other tables, but he did so with aplomb. In contrast, the hostess seemed a bit frazzled, but it was a very busy night so that came as no shock. So what did I eat?! Here comes the breakdown: Chestnut Street Classic Caesar Native hearts of romaine, Caesar dressing, croutons & parmesan cheese. As Caesar salads go this was good. I liked the extra amount of shaved cheese on the salad and the dressing wasn't overwhelming. The lettuce was nice and crispy as well. Pumpkin Ravioli Sauteed native butternut squash, garden sage, tomato vodka sauce and grated parmesan cheese. Interestingly, even though butternut squash is listed as the primary ingredient, this ravioli had a VERY distinctive flavor of pumpkin. I'm not sure if it's mixed in there, or they used spices to achieve this, but I was quite impressed. The sauce was absolutely delicious. Cod Ravioli This was a special of the night. Using a slated cod, these raviolis had a similar consistency to the Pumpkin, but their flavor was completely different. They were in a cream sauce as well, which helped to serve as a counterpoint to the salty fish. Overall this was a fabulous dish. In the interests of full disclosure, I have to confess that the menu for "75 Chestnut" didn't exactly rock my world when I first read it, but what I will say is that what they do have on it is done very well from what I can tell. This is a great spot for lunch or dinner if you're looking for some good contemporary American fare. read more

My vegetarian selection was fantastic. See photo of brown rice pasta with fresh veggies. My husband's filet mignon was prepared perfectly with a delicious red wine reduction sauce. It was all so good we wiped our plates clean with the tasty bread provided. Our server Shibeal was a delight. They're more of a 3.5 borderline 4. During our visit to Boston we stopped here for some brunch before heading out. I didn't see reviews before hand and just went with the recommendation that this place is good. While, my food was definitely delicious the cocktails were only decent. I mean at $13 a cocktail come correct. GIVE ME A DARN GREAT COCKTAIL. Sheesh. Service was good, our waitress was really nice and courtesy. It definitely felt a bit stuffy in there and our table was so close to a table of 6 that I really couldn't concentrate on what the beau was saying. Overall a good place probably just wouldn't visit on my next Boston visit. read more

I came here on a wintry spring day with a friend - I had never heard of it, but as she is a Beacon Hill native, she knew of this gem, off the beaten path of the well traversed Charles Street. We happened to be here on a Tuesday, and in celebration of Taco Tuesday, we both got tacos and I got a margarita while she enjoyed a Corona. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was cozy and warm, and the staff were very sweet and attentive. I thanked my friend profusely for sharing her favorite Beacon Hill spot with me - definitely a place I'll be returning to again and again. read more

The staff was fantastic, friendly, and really seemed to go out of their way in order to make sure our party was well taken care of and having a great time. The prices felt right for the food, the portions were appropriate, and the food was fantastic. The atmosphere was really relaxed. It felt very comfortable, it was quiet enough to have a conversation but not so quiet you felt awkward talking. The layout of the tables is very conducive to conversation and the lighting was very comforting. The cheese and crackers provided were a really nice touch. The staff seemed to really understand the menu options and had no problem giving recommendations, and there was a good selection of beer, wine, and spirits. I had the bacon-wrapped pork loin with pureed parsnips, suateed kale, and a balsamic reduction at the suggestion of our waitress - it was fantastic. The entree was priced at around $24 and since it was a special $2 of the proceeds go to charity. I finished the meal with the creme brulee trio which was also very good. A snowy Sunday in Boston could have kept us cooped up in our hotel room. What a meal this was! Highly recommended by both Yelp and a friend, 75 Chestnut did not disappoint when we needed a Beacon Hill brunch on a Sunday morning. Walking distance from our hotel, 75C is tucked away in a quaint residential area of Beacon Hill that transforms you back to a foregone New England era. Everything about this experience was spot on. Seated quickly (thankfully because it got crazy busy!). Bloody Mary bar was on point. Homemade sticky buns to start - incredible. Lobster omelette, so fresh and tasty. I had no complaints about my experience and wish I frequented Boston more so I could enjoy 75C more often. Hope to be back here soon and can't wait to enjoy another great meal. I'd like to try their lunch or dinner. If it's half as good as brunch, this place is would earn a five star ranking from me. read more

I am so incredibly biased in my review because it was at the end of a day that began with brunch at 75 Chestnut that my now-boyfriend (and love of my life) asked me out. So I tend to look at any business we visited that day through a doe-eyed, love-hazed sheen. But hey. At least I own up to it. OK, I'll set bias aside now (I can do it because I went to journalism school and journalists are never, ever biased...nope, never). The food gets an overall 3 stars. My meal was actually more like 2 stars, but my boyfriend's (then friend of friend's in awkward, suspiciously set-up situation) was pretty good, so I know they're capable of good food. The bad first: Omelet 75, aka my pick. Ugh! Who seasoned the omelet? Because they forgot to. Considering how great the ingredients were (I heart mushrooms), the omelet was completely bland and forgettable. Breakfast sausages were greasy--appropriately savory as any ground meat in a wiener shape is, but nothing memorable either. The potatoes were the best part of the dsh. The seasoning was great, but I can't eat just starchy potatoes for brunch. Thank goodness for.... The good: Mimosas. Classic brunch cocktail and 75 Chestnut did it right. The tomato soup my boyfriend ordered. Rich and creamy. I could not stop asking for more (which I suppose encouraged more conversation between us, which I suppose was a good thing. OK, I don't suppose. I know). The assorted rolls, sticky and sweet, they served before the meal. Yummy! Oh, and the funny: The make-your-own-bloody-Mary section. Don't let people in your party who know nothing about mixology make one. Grossest thing ever. But totally hysterical to watch. Live jazz is great too, though the ensemble is so small, I almost missed them. read more
