North Steyne Emporio are also the Northern Beaches flagship store for Vittorio Coffee and also offer Affogoto,Green, Jasmine and Black teas. The homemade pastas can be enjoyed within the cafe or can be taken home also. My stable is the salad sandwiches in mixed grain, fruit salad with yoghurt and of course my skim mocha. Anyone who has lived overseas will know that there is simply no equivalent to the authentic Aussie sandwich bar - you know, the one where you're faced with a counter of endless little stainless steel tubs of every conceivable sandwich component from which you can pick and choose your own personal combination. Chicken, beetroot and alfalfa? Sure! Ham, mayonnaise, lettuce and preserved lemon? No problem. No butter? Of course. And Emporio does it as well as the best - pick your bread (regular or sour dough; bun, baguette or bagel etc) then go to town. A personal favourite is the chicken schnitzel with mayonnaise and chilli sauce plus whatever salad I'm in the mood for. They don't come cheap, but you won't need dinner.

The only benchmark in the city I have for sandwiches is Abercrombie Lane but I deem this benchmark not fair given Abercrombies reputation. Those steps are like an Oasis in an otherwise busy city-shaded by big trees this nook is very quiet and peaceful. Finally I decided to at least stop and get a coffee here. Splendid isn't really much to look at inside. The yellow walls, the basic tables and chairs, the display of sandwich ingredients and the coffee machine are the highlights. That said the greeting and the service makes up for it - it's a warmth you don't often find in the area. The coffee was surprisingly good - couldn't tell you what it was exactly - it came from a glass jar that had 'Decaf' written on it. Still, this place is just 'splendid'.

It was a bit pricey and feel the açai bowl needs to be improved, not sure what ingredients are used but possibly less coconut water and maybe adding a frozen banana would help make this guilt-free snack tastier. In the past, I've purchased some of their Red Mill products but this visit was strictly açai time only. I'll give this place one more try..
