So many dreams I overslept…read more..... I thought this quote I happen to read on a blog (fatfatsheep) seemed so fittingly for this piece. You see, I really wanted the scoop on this hamburger truck I discovered about 2 months ago, before the big glossies and newspapers jumped on the bandwagon. Didn't quite succeed at that, but still, I would like to support the cause. That day, around noon, this burger joint suddenly sprouted in the in the most unlikely places, like a tiny black dot between the jungle of concrete and high rise at the Zuidas. After frying up burgers and causing jungle fever for about 2 1/2 hours the truck just as swiftly disappeared. The guys from Thrill grill move their truck, equipped with a proper charcoal broiler!, to a different location every day (check their website/fb page for the location). So what took me so long to write this review? Well, since I'd decided I didn't want to be a lab rat anymore and partake in the rat race, I've sorta been in between jobs and have adjusted my sleeping habits accordingly. Me and the people working at the Zuidas have in a sense become proverbial antiscians. So while the suits have been slaving away in the office since dawn, working up an appetite, noon is rather early time for me to have lunch or even breakfast for that matter. This was my 3rd effort at getting my hands on this elusive burger. The 1st attempt botched when I noticed the truck for the 1st time but didn't have any cash on me and the nearest ATM was out of order. The 2nd shot failed about 2 weeks ago, when I arrived at Gustav Mahlerplein at 1.30pm, only to see the truck had already closed up. Seriously!? Why close up so early? Does no one have lunch after 1pm anymore? Anyways, I particularly had a hard time waking up that morning due to the party my next-door neighbors had decided to organize the night before. As they were pumping up the volume, I lay there thinking: I don't think I've ever been to party where a Micheal Jackson song didn't make an appearance at one point or another. They really made me work for it, but today, I finally got to try the thriller burger. So how does the this burger stack up? Should it be on continuous repeat like the famous MJ song? I have to say, I was expecting quite a lot from the burger that has the Kranenborg name attached to it. And boy, it delivered. For only €6,95 you have a great burger that has everything a good burger needs. I think for that price, you really can't do much better.The meat was just right- I like the spices and flavorings to be just on the outside of my meat patty and not mixed through. The burger flavor really benefits from the charcoal grilling. All the trimming were there: red onion, tomato, gherkin, bacon, you name it. Really loved the tartness of the sauce specially developed by mister Kranenborg. Maybe the burger could use a stronger bacon flavor, but that would be my only criticism, if any.... The fries are wedges, but then cut down the middle of the back so they fry up crisp and are actually seasoned including with salt (a rarety in Amsterdam). The star was the double fatboy burger though, two nice sized patties with great texture and flavor oozing hot grease and living up to the name. The real cheddar cheese was nicely melted and the bun was so toasted the edges were crisp. The thick cut bacon was plentiful and brought the salt. Lettuce, tomato and pickle complemented the whole packacge nicely and brought variety to the flavor and texture of the burger. This was a much better burger than I expected, but be warned its for the meat loving American and is sized and seasoned that way. Service was friendly and fast.

Amsterdam Kookt was a great use of the space at Olympisch stadium. It was my first time at an event here and I was very impressed by the number of options. There were a number of big sponsors such as Juniper and Leffe and representation from the stalls you might know from De Foodhallen along with some exciting new options. It was set up that you used coins to pay for things which would yield quicker transactions when busy. We went on Sunday, the last day which was also Mothers' Day and it wasn't crazy busy which was quite nice for a Sunday afternoon. There were a lot of good looking food options, notably a high number of Sushi options, a Satay Bar, 1-3 Mexican options. There was a gourmet hotdog bar and at least three good burger options including the Butcher and the one we tried. I noted a Johnny Doodle chocolate (love it! Check it out and their ethos if you don't know them yet) and an ice cream truck too. There was a churros van, gin and tonics, wine. The Funkavan was cool complete with a better looking scooby doo dancing guy. There were at least two other music stages, the main one and the one in the Juniper area. Stoke stacks were on hand in the Juniper "smoke pit area". Very mad max meets Steampunk themed - a no-no area for vegetarians and vegans. There was a lot of meat around including a whole pig laid out on "display". I must admit, the sight of this put even me off my meat a bit. We opted for the XL meatlovers burger which had pulled pork, a rare burger with tasty aged meat (they made a point of ensuring all customers knew this and warned you up front), bacon, and a super tasty coca-cola or bourbon slow cooked pork chop as a dressing on top the burger. This was a lot of meat but good. My husband was very happy with this choice. There was a chickpea van with vegan options that looked good too. It was good to see a number of vegan friendly options with so much meat around. I'd come back with more people on the Friday or Saturday afternoon/evening :)

Of course there is beer and wine, and if you look around, you can find some cocktails too! There's a lot of space to walk around and isn't as cramped as some of the other festivals. I love the industrial feel of the area and the different sections of trucks. It's a little bit of a maze, but it pretty much follows one flow, so you shouldn't get too turned around. To get to the end is quite a walk. The location was good being right off the ferry from Centraal or the Westerdoks. It is well-marked and has space for bikes. But if you are coming from the ferry, I would just leave your bike where you got on. There is music along with some small and some large stages for you to enjoy. Only downside to the main (big) stage was it was all standing room. I think it would be more inviting with chairs, or high tops to stand around and eat on. The festival works on a token system (like many of them do) and there were registers along the way--not just at the entrance. And there were machines to insert cash to get your tokens. That might help quicken things. But the registers also take pin cards. It seemed that most items were between 2-3 tokens, and they do have half tokens as well. You can find a few items for 1-1.5 tokens and drinks are usually 2-3 tokens. These tokens are 2.50 each, but it's a festival and everything is overpriced. And in case you aren't aware, most people in Amsterdam speak English, so you will be fine if you don't speak Dutch. We did bring in our own food for him but they're luckily cool with that and for ourselves we bought some drinks, a duck burger, veggie stew, lamb burger, twister crisp, brownie and ice cream and some take home treats from arzu bakt and madam cocos. My personal favourites: arzu's salted caramel and pecan bar and madam's ginger and chilli cocos balls. Wasn't really feeling all that hungry any more by the time we got here, otherwise I would have tried the veggie quesedilla from the tortilla truck. Might go back over the weekend just to try it, and hey, the bike ride over already justifies the eating right?? As far as the veggie stew and twister crisp: at €4,50 and €2,00 they were definitely worth the money. Delicious, somewhat nutritious and definitely not way overpriced like some other things... And as for the meat stuff, hopefully le husband will write his review soon!

They also have take away coffee now that the catering is closed. I've been here in the spring and winter. The spring is definitely more beautiful, but it's all stunning. Plenty of bike parking.
