George Henry Black was a master brickmaker whose handmade bricks shaped some of Winston-Salem's…read moremost recognizable homes, churches, factories and civic buildings. Born in 1879 to parents who had been enslaved, he came to the city as a child and eventually built his own brickyard, gaining a national reputation for the quality and durability of his traditional hand-pressed bricks. His work appeared everywhere, from local mansions to the original North Carolina Baptist Hospital, Salem College and even restoration projects in Colonial Williamsburg. This statue in front of the Forsyth County Courthouse honors that legacy, recognizing a craftsman whose bricks literally built the community and whose century-long life reflected both skill and perseverance. The memorial includes examples of his original bricks and stands near buildings that used them, making it a fitting tribute to someone whose work helped define the city's architectural character. It is legal to ask people for money. This is black letter case law from the Supreme Court. See City…read moreof Lakewood v. Willis that determined the First Amendment protects speech in traditionally public forums like streets, sidewalks, and parks, and laws banning certain speech (like panhandling) in these forums are content-based and therefore unconstitutional. So to get around this kind of ban and prevent residentially challenged people from asking for money on street corners, Greensboro passed an ordinance. Section 18-44 defines blocking or impeding street and sidewalk access as "Standing, sitting, or lying down on the portion of a traffic island that is less than six (6) feet wide, except where using the traffic island to cross the street or during an emergency." Yes, it's not a good look to have beggars in your city. And sure, you can donate to centralized causes that help homeless without actually giving them money. But some people don't want to deal with that bureaucracy and they don't want to be included in lists or processes. So they stand on corners and ask for money with "Anything helps" signs. Sometimes I give to them. Sometimes I don't. I wonder if the Greensboro police would prevent the fire department doing their "Fill the boot" fundraising. I'm not a lawyer and I don't play one on Yelp. So don't take this as legal advice. I just don't care for this law and I'm not a fan of Greensboro having it on their books.
