Yelp led me to this Dekra location for my latest emissions inspection. The reviews are polarized --…read morea bunch of five-star reviews and a few one and two-star reviews. My three-star rating is because I waited almost 1.5 hours to get my emissions checked here. That's by far the longest I've waited at any emissions place over the last ~25 years. I came here because the place I'd been going to in recent years was temporarily closed. I pulled up to the lot at 2:18pm on an ordinary Thursday. The time printed on my report was 3:39pm. When I pulled up, there were nine cars ahead of me. The cars were packed in and the tail end of my car (just a little bit) was sticking out onto Collier Rd. It wasn't clear where else go to because the Goodwill next door doesn't want Dekra customers in their lot. The guy in the SUV ahead of me got tired of waiting and left. A woman in an SUV behind me looked agitated and annoyed with the wait. If you come here, be prepared to wait. Hopefully, you'll get lucky like some of the other Yelpers here. This is a one-man shop. I was seen by the manager "Mr. Ben" Benjamin Floyd, who's mentioned in many of the reviews. I believe it's just him and one other inspector who works at this location. Mr. Ben is a personality. He's a talker and we hit it off immediately, joking around and shooting the breeze. I could tell he did the same with others ahead of me, because some of their faces lit up, as well as with others who left reviews (hence all the five-star ratings). He runs a tight ship and isn't afraid to put people in their place if they give him a hard time. He is trying to get cars through as fast as he can, but this location is very busy. This is a tiny place. I saw Mr. Ben had a deal where he'll do your emissions test ($25) and install two Rain-X wiper blades for $65. On-site is a porta-john and a quick hand carwash. I saw two small ladies working the carwash on the other side of the emissions testing structure. Visit this link for coupons (e.g., $4 off your next emissions test): https://www.dekra.us/en/ga-offers/ Dekra started in Germany in 1925, then known as Deutscher Kraftfahrzeug-Überwachungs-Verein (German Motor Vehicle Inspection Association). The "Deutscher Kraftfahrzeug" is where "DEKRA" comes from. Read their Wiki for some interesting history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dekra I had time since I was waiting in line. At the time of writing this review, Dekra has 20 inspection stations in Georgia, all in metro Atlanta: https://www.dekra.us/en/georgia/georgia-inspection-stations/ Mr. Ben told me wait times are much better if you come first thing in the morning: 8am, Monday-Friday and 9am, Saturday-Sunday. He told me this Dekra location was experiencing an unusually higher demand than normal at the time.

This location is right next door to the Austell tag office. According to the associate (Ben), as of…read moreJuly 10, 2024, they have only been open for 2 months. Interior / Exterior The exterior seemed clean and I didn't venture inside. They are in that little building formerly occupied by Community of Faith Church, Not sure what's down the road that runs alongside the spot, but when I got ready to leave there were tons of cars extending back down the street. Luckily, a friendly motorist waved me in so I was able to pull out fairly quickly. Customer Service Ben was nice. Chatty and pretty aggressive sales wise. It didn't bother me at first, because I'm from the country but he is definitely very informal with his customers. I can't get mad because he definitely told me about some discounts I wouldn't known about otherwise - but I'm warning you to be prepared for him to REALLY try to get you to buy some windshield wipers. I explained to him, when I called yesterday, that I was on a budget because I inherited some vehicles that could not yet be sold due to probate and I was dealing with having to pay insurance and keep them tagged and titled. Their regular non-discounted price at this location is currently $20. Ben said the other locations, like Atlanta Rd are $25. I also like the fact that there is no surcharge if you're using plastic to pay. But what I didn't love is that I told him 4 separate times that I wasn't interested in purchasing wipers because I don't even drive this car. Then when I looked the blades up on Amazon, Dekra's RainEx blade price was $11 higher ($22 total). He would not let up. He kept on about how quick it would be, how he hated to see a $100K vehicle with crappy blades and how it really pissed him off. When I told him that I didn't think blades were even visible, he said he always notices blades. When that didn't work - he beat me over the head with the fact that he'd given me a discount on the emissions test AND he was willing to nearly match the Amazon price on the blades. Honestly, I felt guilt-tripped and I was ready to get the heck out of there because I had two more vehicles to get done, so I just said ok. Keep in mind, once I got all 4 vehicles tested, I had to spend over $1800 at the tag office because one of these cars is apparently NOT depreciating like normal. Laughing / crying emoji. I respect the hustle and I'm sure Ben is a nice guy, but I definitely felt the sales thing was way to aggressive. For that reason alone, I wound up taking the other two cars elsewhere. See other reviews. Price Value I already mentioned the $20 regular price but it might change to $25 in the future according to Ben (to match the other Dekra centers). Deliberately not mentioning my discounted price, but be sure to ask whether they have any military or first responder discounts. Personally, I feel like they will keep the $20 price because Austell Emissions (4612 -3 Austell Rd), located right next door on the other side of the tag office charges $18 for cash / $18.72 for card and Lincoln Emissions (4968 Austell Rd) charges $18 as well. Fuerza Latina Insurance (4788 Austell Rd) also charges $18. Overall Overall, I would go back - but only when I know Kimberlee or another associate is gonna be there. Ben is too hard to refuse / say no to. Lol.

I was looking for a place near my home to get my car's emissions inspected. I found Star Emission…read moreon Yelp, saw its high ratings, and decided to give this place a try. They didn't let me down. I pulled into the garage around 3:40pm on a Tuesday and was out with a passed test result about 10 minutes later, maybe less. The cost was $25, the standard emissions inspection fee in Georgia. I got lucky. When I arrived, there were no other customers. I drove right into the testing bay. They only have one bay so you'll have to wait if there's already a car getting tested. A line quickly built up behind me. By the time I left, there were three cars waiting. This place isn't much to look at, but what emissions testing place is? It's located behind the QuikTrip on Howell Mill Road. Star Emission has been around long before the QT here. The first Yelp review for this place was written by old Yelp Atlanta Community Manager Kathleen M on July 1, 2009. The Howell Mill QT opened in March 2018. There's a small seating area inside the garage, along the wall, if you want to sit and wait. During my visit, there was a table with magazines (People Magazine, IIRC) and a container of peppermint candies. Opposite the seating area was a TV (Judge Judy was on) and a bulletin board with the shop and its workers' certificates from the State of Georgia. The official name of this business is "Star Emission Service LLC" and the station ID number is GA102115. Certified Emission Inspector Patrick tested my car. He was friendly and polite. Great customer service. We found out that we're both from North Carolina. I had actually driven directly from Chapel Hill to Star Emission - about a six-hour drive - which is how the conversation got started. Patrick taught me something new. He told me I could go across the street to Kroger to renew my car's registration and get a new tag sticker. All I needed was my driver's license and a credit/debit card. There's an official Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) Georgia Tag Kiosk inside Kroger, next to the pharmacy. How long have these MVD kiosks been around? In previous years, I'd renew online. And before then, I'd renew via snail mail. The Georgia Tag Kiosk was fast and convenient. Digression: I've lived in this part of Atlanta since 2000, but my first visit to Star Emission wasn't until this year, 2022. The reason is due in large part to the COVID-19 pandemic. I used to get my emissions checked near where I worked (Marietta, Cobb County). Working-from-home had me looking for a closer spot and that's how I came to Star Emission. Thank you, Patrick and Star Emission.
