Had a good visit to 1848 today with my Dad. Overall, I would say 4 stars. Brisket was super tender and smoky and ribs were very tasty, but both meats were just lukewarm making me doubt their freshness. Nothing positive or negative to say about the sides. Beware of their pulled pork bbq sauce, though, as it is heavily mustard flavored. Prices were good, services was friendly and fast. First visit and extremely pleased. Posts from other people warn to get there early if you want the full selection of meat. We were there at @3:30 and only brisket was available. But it was delicious! Potato salad was great. Cole slaw was kind of forgettable. Craft beer drinkers - they have a new beer garden with an excellent draft and can selection. The outdoor space is very well done. I love bbq all the sides but let me say this place has the worst sides. The charro beans taste nothing like charro beans. Now the coleslaw....it was mustard coleslaw all you could taste was mustard. Now the brisket was ok, not the best flavor but it was moist. read more

Pretty legit Texas Style BBQ. I only tried the moist brisket (point only) and I must say it Was very good. Maybe just slightly over cooked and a little mushy but overall a very well done brisket. Meats are good, perfect amount of smoke for me. All the sides are below average, and the bbq sauce is very thin, no real flavor. To be fair , as an extra touch I liked the lady making baked goods. She was very kind, everything looked delicious . No one is going to make a change just for my liking, but if they made a really good barbecue sauce to complement their meats, and work on the side recipes I would probably come back from time to time. Man i really wanted this place to be great. i love bbq and go all over for it. with rudys being the only solid place for bbq i was hoping for a decent place here in brownsville. the main problem is how inconsistent the food is. ive been there 5 times and something always changes, either the sauce tastes different the beans or a different sausage. If you are in Brownsville and want BBQ like you'd be happy to get in Austin, this is the place. The brisket is very similar in style to Franklin's. The ribs are huge, meaty things that are just the right amount of tender - HIGHLY recommended. The ambiance and decor are classic Texas BBQ in a good way. As others have noted, the prices are high compared to most restaurants in Brownsville, but there is no BBQ in the area that comes close to being as good and the prices are on par with what you'd pay for quality BBQ anywhere else. The only thing keeping from adding that fifth star is the side dishes. I've not tried them all as yet and while none were bad in any way, they were not great. I'm very stingy with my fifth stars, and my favorite BBQ joint of all time (sadly closed after the death of the owner) had incredibly good sides. I'd give 4.5 if that was an option. read more

I've been to the Zoo in Brownsville, TX twice in two years. I found 1848 BBQ on Yelp the first time. I made it a point to go back the second time. It less than a mile away from the zoo. We're Winter Texans from Illinois and stay in the Bluebonnet RV Resort in Mission, TX about 60 miles away. Due to Covid there was no indoor dining at this time, however the outside patio seating was available. They also have curbside order/pickup. Ample parking, great food, brisket, pulled pork, beans, chips, coleslaw and more. Unfortunately, no beer, but I'm okay with soft drinks too! read more

I went to 1848 for a Friday lunch and luckily beat the lunch rush. They have a very spacious restaurant with fast service but a semi-limited menu. I ordered a two-meat plate (~$13) that came with two sides. For my meats, I chose both lean and moist brisket. I was a little disappointed by the brisket; it was on the very salty side for BBQ in my opinion and not as tender as I had hoped it would be. The salt definitely overwhelmed the flavor of the brisket and made it difficult to eat. However, I did really love their sides. I got the mac and cheese and the cornbread/pudding. The mac and cheese is so good and gooey without being over the top. And the cornbread/pudding is really unique! I haven't had anything like it before. It's like a cornbread but moist and soft on the inside that's absolutely delicious. So overall, I want to give 1848 a 3.5 star rating. 3 for the actual bbq, 4 for the sides. read more

The person cutting the meat had just come in from outside (I guess where they cook it or something). I didn't see her wash her hands. I wanted 1/3 pound of brisket. They'd only sell that size to me in a plate which I didn't want. They could only sell me the meat by itself in 1/4 pound serving.
