I've been looking for a new Barber since my "go to" closed after covid. I've tried a few places that looked good and had good reviews but didn't live up to the hype. But 12 Pell is an excellent shop. I had Tim and he was spectacular. He took the time to get to know what I was looking for and what I'd tried in the past. He explained exactly what he was doing and made sure I agreed with his plan. He spent time creating a very collaborative experience. His technique was polished and his gear was top of the line. I definitely got the best cut I've had in years as a result. He gave me some spot on styling tips specific to my hair type. My favorite part was that he meticulously reviewed his own work - tracking down any stray hairs and making sure everything was spot on: he's a real professional. The vibe of the place made it clear they were very "customer experience" oriented, and they nailed it. I felt comfortable and taken care from the moment I walked in. Every chair was filled (while maintaining excellent covid protections) which says a lot, and everyone there had good relationships with their clients. I've been to places where there was animosity between the different barbers and that's always awkward. The place is clean and well lit, calm music, a very relaxing environment. The price point is spot on, if not below market for what I got. I've spent a lot more for worse service and worse cuts. My friend recommended this place to me and at first the haircut looked really nice. The dude who cut my hair was mad nice to me during the cut. He waxed it up to make it look good which it did. When I got home and washed the wax out, the top sides of my hair stuck out insanely causing me to look like a palm tree. I ended up having to cut the sides myself in order to even it out and straighten the cut. This was annoying, tedious and something the barber should've been able to see. Personally this place is overrated for the price which is around $50ish for a haircut. On top of it I tipped the guy $10. If you go here make sure you do not get your hair waxed before checking to see if the cut is good. read more

I went to 12Pell only once (can't wait to return!) and all I have to say is my stylist, Tyler, knows how to cut hair, like really cut hair! I've been getting hair fades for years as my go-to and although I loved them, it was time for a change especially after I lost some hair on top after a rigorous diet and training program over the summer. I did what I needed to regrow my hair medically and grew it out for 4-5 months. Once it got long enough and luxuriant, I wanted a really cool Asian hairstyle that was also low maintenance, yet modern...kind of like the South Korean men's hairstyles. I told Tyler what I wanted, which was low maintenance at home (Work From Home) yet stylish and versatile to be styled more formal if I wanted to. He consulted me along the way and he executed perfectly with precision (the comma hairstyle)! He taught me how to style my hair in a variety of ways for home or when going out so I know what to do between cuts. My hair tends to poof in the back and he knew how to trim that down to allow my hair to grow on top of it. In summary, my first visit at 12Pell with Tyler was a 5 out of 5 stars. The only downside to my visit was that he had my cut hair so well in a way to allow my hair to grow into the cut which lasts for 2-3 months before my next cut LOL. That being said, be aware about allowing them to video and post your cut on social media, because my son got mocked over his weight and the salon didn't remove the comments. I always heard of this place on social media and TikTok but finally made an appointment when I found out a barber I used to go to joined up with them (shout out David Kim). They have two locations, I went to their Mulberry one which is nice and spacious. All the staff are kind and welcoming, I didn't feel intimidated at all coming in even though it was my first time and they are pretty well known on social media. If you get the chance, I recommend booking with David Kim, he takes his time, is attentive and never seems to rush. I've been to several different barbers since I moved to NYC and I would say he's the best one I've been to. When he moved to NJ for a bit and I had to find a new barber, I would show them pictures of my cuts & fades that David had given me, that's the example he set. If you're trying to get the cleanest fade of your life, come to 12 pell. I got cut by Tim and he made sure that I was happy with the final result. Even though he initially tried a middle part, I didn't really vibe with it and he quickly changed it into my standard undercut -- All in the span of 30 minutes. Although the cut was godly, I have to note that it is a fairly expensive haircut. $45 plus tip came out to almost $60. If you can afford it, do not hesitate. My guy was on vacation and I was referred to try this place. I must be really old or just out of touch. The store is selling clothes and sneakers. I was not really descriptives on how I liked my hair. I'm used to saying to my guy the usual. 10 minutes of cutting, I go for a rinse, he gels my hair and boom done. Tim said, they were fully booked for the day but I might get lucky and someone might cancel last minute. Lucky for me one of Tim's appts cancelled before my friend was done with his haircut and he was able to cut me. Tim was super knowledgeable about my hairstyle and head shape. Barber: Thinley Review: I got my second haircut from Thinley and am very happy with the results. The first time he cut my hair he took his time and actually convinced me to do something different from what I had initially asked him. As a result he left my hair longer and gave it a great shape that ended up being perfect for the professional headshot that I had taken later that day (see picture). About a month after that first cut with Thinley, I tried a different barber and gave some hasty/imperfect instructions which kind of messed up my look. When I went back to Thinley yesterday, I once again needed his advice about what to do. I showed him the headshot and said I wanted to get back to that hairstyle. He advised cutting the sides shorter this time and letting the top grow out more, and instructed me to come back in 2 months. If you're an Asian guy in NYC you already know there aren't a lot of mid-tier options around.
