I am glad for this place. While not huge, it gets people through pretty quickly! It's located in the heart of downtown Encinitas and takes advantage of the outside space. The staff are friendly and efficient. A friend, her 4 year old son, and I came here for brunch and took advantage of the specials (except the kid--he kept it classic with a grilled cheese and apple juice). She ordered the chile verde omelette and I ordered the corned beef hash benedict and BOTH WERE SO GOOD. The chile verde was REALLY flavorful and huge and the guac on top was wonderful. So good. The benedict was also perfect. The hash was homey and delicious and tender, nothing like the canned stuff (which I honestly love), and was so good. The egg was cooked well and the hollandaise was great. Prices are fair for the portion and quality (think about $15/person after tax and tip). Super family friendly, super fun, good food--no wonder this place is so beloved! read more

The wait time for the table lasted for ages but there were tons of people waiting that Sunday morning. So don't go on Sunday's. It's a small diner so we sat outside and they ran out of Diet Coke so I went to the 711 and got a 2liter and everyone laughed but wasn't nothin funny about that omelette I had. But hey maybe it wasn't for me. Definitely not living up to the hype everyone was giving it and the anticipation of the wait times. If you like great food, where you can eat outside with your dog (or not) the food here is exceptional and the price very reasonable. We prefer casual places with great eats, and this fits the bill. From the few times I've been here it feels like a slice of Route 66. The Corned beef hash is excellent and the pancakes are very good. When you go in it feels like a diner in Arizona or New Mexico but your in Encinitas your hometown and got a slice of that here. Great food and great prices! Came in for breakfast yesterday (New Years Day) around 11 AM. The wait wasn't long, I think we waited a total of 15 minutes max. The place is small and cozy. There's about 6 booths inside, some counter space and a few tables out back They had a great list of specials up, but I went with the corned beef hash. My boyfriend ordered the Shaved Ham Eggs Benedict which was one of the specials. And we split the mini size of the acai bowl. The acai bowl was awesome! It didn't come in a smoothie like texture like most places serve it, it came as a sorbet. It was loaded with tons of gresh fruit: mangoes, kiwi, blueberries, and bananas and REALLY good granola and topped with coconut. SOOOO GOOD! The corned beef hash was a little too salty for me, but the hash browns were awesome! The portions were great, and the service was fast. We left CA a couple of years ago for Dallas. We come back frequently for our "coastal fix" This entire town says Old California Beach town and the 101 is a great example of a local place to eat. TOURIST ALERT do not be afraid. This is a genuine locals restaurant with excellent service and food with very reasonable prices. We got here early on a Saturday and there was no waiting. One thing I love about riding the coast is that there are may bicycle friendly places to eat. 101 Diner is no different. While the seating is rather limited and was quite crowded on a weekend, we managed to placed on the patio. There is nothing fancy about 101 Diner however if you're looking for a quality home cooked breakfast at a reasonable price, this is the place for you. The menu is quite extensive so chances are whatever your wants are on that given day, they will have it. Kept it basic as I still had a good distance to make it back home and didn't want to have too much. Eggs, bacon, hashbrowns and an English muffin. (Ok writing that does appear that I over didn't want to have too much) however being a breakfast person, I'm sure as heck not going to have a fruit bowl. Portions were hearty and to my defense, I did leave some of the hashbrowns remaining on the plate...not much though. Service was friendly and extremely attentive considering how busy it was. Never felt as though I was being lost in the shuffle. Sitting on the patio, watching the pedestrians stroll by is a nice way to enjoy a breakfast however you need to be prepared that you will get some exhaust fumes from the cars passing by. read more

I went in here the other day with my daughter. There were people eating at two other tables when we walked in right past the waitress. We sat down and waited a few minutes. The same waitress shows up and says "Oh we are closed now". Gosh, thanks! How bouts you put a "Closed" Sign out front? I have been eating at 101 since I was a little kid. The servers are great and the food is equally as amazing. Everyday they have new delicious breakfast and lunch specials. My favorite for breakfast are the eggs benedict and fruit crepes. For lunch I always order the Mushroom Swiss burger. Just the perfect local spot for breakfast. We have been coming here for many years. When my now 9.5 yr old was an infant, we'd wedge his car seat in on a barstool and ate at the counter. They were beyond kind when i was pregnant and it was our go to breakfast spot. We'd drive from del mar every weekend. The food is fantastic, omelets fluffy. Creative combos of Benedicts. My boyfriend and I stopped by here on our way back to Orange County from San Diego. There are there diner type places within a one block radius with 4 star reviews. We ended up finding parking right in front of this one, so in we go! I ordered the French toast with scrambled egg whites and a turkey patty. What I got was 6 pieces of the best French toast I've ever had (and that's saying a lot since French toast is actually my favorite food ever), a heaping plate of egg whites, and a massive turkey burger patty. I absolutely LOVE this diner!! Open for breakfast and lunch. I stop here every chance I get. THE BEST home-fried potatoes I have ever had! The portions are fantastic for the price, too! Some of the best breakfast food that I've had the pleasure of having. As if being in town for a weekend get-together wasn't awesome enough (while over a foot of snow was falling in Philadelphia), we had the pleasure of stopping by here to grab a nice brunch before setting up for the party. The eggs benedict with avocado and maple bacon was absolutely phenomenal, with clearly fresh and well-sourced ingredients, and the hash was amazing as well. This was easily one of the tastiest breakfasts I have ever had the joy of consuming. What a perfect place to start one of my best Independence Days in years! My friend and I arrived around 9am and there was a long wait. He, being a local assured me 101 was well worth the wait. He was so right - I had the chorizo scramble and he had crab cakes eggs Benedict. CRAB CAKES EGGS BENEDICT! That says it all right there! Both our meals were so delish that we ended up pushing both plates in the middle and eating off of each other's the whole time. There's a "specials" list each morning that consists of things like "Carne Asada Benedict" and an assortment of pancakes filled with awesome. If you like hollandaise sauce you might want to get your cholesterol checked right now because its going to be going up the next time you go here. It's located in the last sleepy beach town in San Diego County. The staff is friendly and the food is great. You can even bring your dog and sit on the patio if you want. Awesome little diner!! Yelp led us to the place across the street but the delicious food smell and atmosphere brought us over here. I had the crab cake Benedict and acai bowl combo (yes!! They will do different combinations like a Benedict and pancakes etc. too!) That was $8.50, which is a great price for the amount of food and quality I got. My boyfriend got the regular Benedict with bacon and avocado. That came with a side of your choice - he got hashed Brown's. We've hit up the cottage, broken yoke, the mission, and many other breakfast joints....let me tell you, this place comes out on top! Dog friendly seating outside too. OK...So I have Diner Envy. I live 2 solid hours' drive away from 101 Diner, so I might not be back often, but I sure WOULD come back. In fact, I'd be a regular, if I could. WHY? The decor was fine for a diner, but dat ain't it. The food was solid...great diner food...but dat ain't it. Fast, reliable service? Yup...but dat ain't it. Nope. The reason I'd be back is because of the people. (Not the people sitting in the booths, silly. The staff.) I walked in cold...complete stranger, yet the lady who took my order treated me like I was a 3-5 x's a week REGULAR. Am I a nice guy? Sure. Maybe a little on the quiet side when storming someone else's home turf, but still a decent guy with a warm smile. I wasn't treated like a decent guy with a warm smile. I was treated like I plop down cash at this place enough times per month to pay their light bill. I was treated like I delivered the owner's daughter's baby. I was treated like I was the guy who pulled their dog out of the burning house, saving the family pet whom they love so dearly. That's how I was treated. This lady (first initial is K,) was treating EVERYONE who walked in that way...pet names, smile, jokes and awesome service. You go, K. You rock. I had the steak n eggs, with home fries, 2 poached eggs and a cup of joe. It was great. But that's not why I would come back. I'd come back to dine at 101 because they KNOW how to treat their customers. I can go many places for decent diner food. 9 out of 10 of them I'll leave feeling like a normal bloke. A resounding 5 stars. Honestly a great breakfast place and very kids friendly. When I read that this place had a "surf style" I was worried about taking my toddler there. But tons of booths, a lot of seating. As far as the food, everything was delicious. We got: - California omelette - honestly the star of table. Very tasty. And I got it with a side of cottage cheese and English muffin but could also get fruit, potatoes - half and half - eggs Benedict with carnitas and small acai bowl - only available on the weekdays. Delicious, although the acai was very sorbet-y in consistency and taste... Not sure how healthy it was - kids plate - 3 "dollar pancakes" which were actually gigantic, egg, bacon or sausage. My wife and I had the Eggs Benedict (which rocked) and this special-of-the-day Acai fruit bowl. Amazing. I'd recommend you try it, and if it weren't for the distance between us, I would be there much more often. The wait was a little long, but we could see why once we took our first bite. This is your typical diner complete with vintage signs that offer root-beer floats for 10 cents. They do a great breakfast and lunch in the greasy spoon style. Every time I have been there it's been very busy. On most occasions there is at least a 15 minute wait, but I've only been on the weekends for brunch. When I crave that cream-cheesed stuffed French toast this is my first choice. Tuna melt is scrumptious and they make a really great spinach salad believe it or not with homemade poppyseed dressing. The better half had a 3 egg omelette, not exactly sure which one, but I had a bite and that was tasty too! I guess you can't really go wrong with any item you order here! Next time I gotta try the Acai Energy Bowl! When we arrived, I would say there was about 10 groups of 2 in front of us, but somehow 101 Diner was able to get through the list in about 20 minutes.
