Arctic Char with Crispy fingerling potato, Roasted Tomato, Zucchini, Kale chips, lemon and thyme Vinaigrette
    Patrick F.

Overall: Large portion size dinner with a beautiful view of the canal. Food: We ordered the Beef Tenderloin and Arctic Char as our main courses. Both were very tasty and the portion's were quite generous. The sides were quite good and paired well with the meals, although I think the beef would be better paired with a traditional potato instead of a sweet potato, but that's a person preference. Complimentary bread and butter was provided as well. Drink: We ordered the French 75 and the 4th stage (gin based cocktail). The French 75 was tasty and well-priced (when compared to other restaurants) and the 4th stage was strong and delicious, but would try a different one next time we go. Service: Our server was prompt, courteous and ensured our drinks were full and that we had everything we needed throughout the meal. Atmosphere: Along the Rideau Canal and at the back of the NAC, it has great views and spacious patio. Soft jazz-type music plays in the background and tables are well spaced out. Price: Overall I feel the prices were ok, maybe a bit on the high side for the main courses, but from my recent experience in this COVID era it seems most of the restaurants have increased their prices so take that as you will. Pro-tip: Make a reservation in advance and ask for a table right along the canal for unobstructed views.

Our pre-ballet performance dinner at 1 Elgin, at the National Arts Centre, got off to a rocky start. The hostess inexplicably stopped to speak to the next customers in line while leading us to our table (she actually had to be told by them to finish with us first). She also clearly didn't hear us when we gave our reservation, as they called us by phone soon after we were seated to follow up on our reservation, as if we were a no show. Later, our server (who was generally friendly) got one of our drink orders wrong, and then got one of our entree orders wrong, cursing as he returned to the kitchen with the entrees and realized his mistake - a completely understandable reaction (we've all been there) that shouldn't be within earshot of customers. Although he returned within minutes with the correct order, this also meant that my entree, which had been correct all along, had been sitting around for a few minutes already and was crucially no longer as hot as it should have been. These delays also meant we were very rushed to get to the ballet, luckily in the same building or else we would have been late. Fortunately, the food itself was excellent. The roasted bone marrow, served with citrus mustard green salad, mustard seeds, pickled onions and toasted sourdough, was appropriately buttery smooth, and went very well with the flavours it was paired with. The roast venison medallions, a confit venison with Fleur des Monts cheese pierogi, rutabaga purée, sauerkraut, chicory root jus sauce was amazing, cooked to perfection. The entree I ordered was the hemp seed crusted confit black cod, with celeriac tagliatelle, mousseline & pickled pearls, miso broth, spinach & Nordic shrimp. Although just a tad cooler than it should have been because of the earlier delay, it was otherwise amazing. Miso always pairs well with black cod, but dialing it down to a more subtle presence here was a smart choice given the other flavours at play, especially the celeriac. The light crunch of the crust contrasted nicely with the softness of the fish and mousseline. Despite the great food though, the service still felt frantic, flustered and confused. I understand that evening's show was the first performance of the season, and having no dine in service throughout the pandemic, it's likely everyone was just out of practice. With this in mind, and on the strength of the food itself, I would still come back, and I am sure the service will by then have seen a return to form. For this first visit though, the dining experience was characterized by great food but marred by uneven service.

We ate lunch at Le Cafe and really enjoyed the food and our experience. It was truly nice to have a Canadian meal in the sense all the food was sourced locally or in Canada. I had the BC wild salmon and my friend had the tempura which was really like fish and chips with the chips replaced with oysters. He enjoyed it even more than I enjoyed my salmon. We had a wonderful bottle of Chablis as well. Despite arriving 30 minutes late for our reservation and 15 minutes before they closed we were heartily welcomed, never rushed and told we could stay all afternoon. Service was quite attentive. We sat outside right beside the canal as an added bonus. Really a great experience and meal. The only negative was parking in the bowels of the NAC and finding your way to the restaurant but I would not let stop me from going again - and I will.

This spot had exceptional service. The chef came out to make sure all the food was cooked to our liking. The beef tenderloin is a must have!

Nice restaurant tucked inside the National Arts Centre. Decided to have brunch here for my birthday. Called the day before and was told that everything was booked for brunch. I called again the morning of my birthday, and was able to make reservations right away. Perhaps someone called out? No idea. A little tip- if you park at the National Arts Centre and bring your parking stub in, they will verify it and parking is free. Don't lose your ticket! This place is gorgeous. Perfect place for an art lover like myself. From the garage you have to go up a couple flights of stairs. Le café is easy enough to find, you just have to follow the signs. It's best if you dress up a bit, not anything extremely fancy, though. Upon entering, you will see lots of paintings and print art that occupy the space on the huge white walls. You get a nice view from the inside, with large, clear glass windows, that allow a lot of light to enter the restaurant. Definitely adds on to the brunch feel, although it gets a bit bright if you are seated at a table right next to the windows. Their bar by the entrance is really pretty! Blue lights everywhere. Extremely classy. The servers were excellent and extremely polite. Moving on to their brunch menu.. most of their food was good, but it wasn't amazing, like I was expecting. Their salad bar rocks. Probably my favorite part of this restaurant. Loved the greens and dressing. The dressing was so rich and creamy. It paired well with the croutons. Also being served at the salad bar was sushi, which was not that great (I suggest skipping that). The smoked salmon was great, and so was their thinly sliced roast beef. Oh, and the bread! Excellent. Butter balls to accompany it. You will be asked if you want orange juice, coffee, water, or all three. Water is served in a beautiful glass bottle, which is then poured into your glass by your server. When our coffee was delivered to us, they forgot to give us some cream and sugar (since it does not come on the table), so don't forget to ask for it! As for their brunch menu.. the Singaporean noodles were horrible- very, very bland. Had a bit of spice to it but the noodles felt so dry. Their general tso's was cooked very well, but it was a bit salty. The dumplings served were actually very enjoyable, bite size too. The bok choy was cooked nicely and great with the meat. They had a dish called mashed potatoes, but the potatoes were actually served on TOP of what looked and tasted like rolled out pasta in the shape of a burrito with white cream sauce on top, and filled with spinach and cheese inside. This was amazing!! Do get that, and lots of it. I really enjoyed the poached egg that was served on top of an english muffin. Cooked to perfection, and it was put together beautifully. Loved that the yolk was runny and complimented the english muffin well. Your typical breakfast food was served towards the end, which included scrambled eggs and bacon. Now, for their dessert menu, which I always, always, save room for: not a big selection. You've got what looked like cream filled pastries that looked like mini burgers, two types of custards, a small pie type dessert with a chocolate pudding filling topped with an orange peel, and this while ball on a stick. I seriously did not know what to think of the last one. The cream pastries were honestly not too special. The custards were alright, but the mini pie was excellent. The white ball on the stick.. it was almost like a rice pudding inside, covered in white chocolate. Not at all what i would have expected. I didn't enjoy it. Overall high rating for the excellent service, atmosphere, and the salad bar. The main brunch dishes and dessert were good, but still a bit of a disappointment, considering it was over $30/person including taxes. Will I come back? Probably not, but it's definitely once of those places you should at least try once. Tons of high quality pictures for you, as usual :) Happy eating!

The next morning I was craving real food and found Ratatouille Bistro online. It did not disappoint. I went back multiple times during my stay. The dishes were incredible. The Short Rib Hash Skillet was rich, flavorful, and comforting with the braised short rib, wild mushrooms, caramelized onions, smoked cheddar, sunny side eggs, and crispy smashed potatoes. The Beef Brisket and Caramelized Onion Benedict on their homemade herb scone was just as good. Both dishes were memorable. The walk through the ByWard Market and Lowertown area in the snow made it even better. It felt cozy and cinematic being bundled up and heading to a French fusion cafe. I loved this place.

I'm very mixed on Ratatouille…read more The concept is that the chef traveled a lot and learned different cooking styles and blended them into a French fusion. The techniques are good. I just wish that he spent a little more time working in seasoning foods. None of our food was bad but none of it was standout great. I take that back; the ratatouille Wellington did actually taste good if you don't mind readiness in your ratatouille, which I guess I don't mind but don't prefer. Our server was very into food and did a great job describing the dishes. I was a little put off that he sort of sat/leaned his butt on the table next to us while he did so. It was almost too chilly in the restaurant but bearable. 3 stars: If someone else really wanted to go back, i guess I would, though reluctantly.

I was SO stoked to finally visit the Moonroom after seven or so years of wanting to go!…read more After a Saturday night at Bluesfest, we waited somewhere else for about half an hour before they told us the kitchen was backed up, so we walked down Preston and I was so glad the Moonroom was still open. We didn't get there until about 12:30am and it was pretty full. We didn't leave until maybe 2:30am and it was still pretty full considering the time. They're not normally open this late, but it seems like a lot of the businesses on Preston decided to stay open later to catch the post-Bluesfest crowd. Good call! We decided to sit inside since there was an empty table, otherwise I would've liked to sit out on their back patio, which looked really pretty with the lights. Inside was a nice vibe though, too. It's small/narrow, dimly lit, with sheets covering the different coloured ceiling lights, and candles on the table. It's very intimate and pretty romantic. We sat close to the bar and there was another party of two beside us. The music was a bit louder so we couldn't really hear the other table's conversations, but not so loud that we couldn't hear each other. They were playing the Bee Gees when we walked (danced) in, so we were really about the jams. My husband got a rotating draught IPA by Daft Brewing, can't remember which one it was. I got the Jill Collins, which had Tanqueray Gin, Affino Limone, fresh lemon and mint, cane syrup, and a Moon soda top. It was super refreshing, bright, and not too sweet, which is exactly what I wanted. We shared/I mostly ate the "OG Grilled Cheese" and "Panzanella-esque Salad". The grilled cheese had aged Balderson and cream cheeses in a crunchy baguette smothered in toasted garlic butter, served with Moon ketchup. It was exactly as described, with very crunchy, buttery garlic bread and creamy cheese. The Moon ketchup is made in-house, thinner and chunkier than processed, store-bought ketchup, with stronger flavours. It was okay, but I didn't need to dip much in the ketchup because I really enjoyed the sandwich and it was on the saltier side itself. Because it was a lot creamier than gooey, I'd say it was more of a sandwich than a grilled cheese, but still very tasty. I really am not a huge fan of salad in general, but I can't complain when it was burrata on top. It also had salty bread, arugula, roasted tomatoes, fresh peaches, herbs, and honey. The peaches were more firm than ripe and juicy, which was good for a salad, though I wish they were a bit sweeter. The burrata wasn't creamy inside like I expected, but I love cheese in any form. I really don't know what possessed me to get salad, especially after a bunch of drinks in the wee hours of the night, but my body thanked me later. Salty, bitter, a little sweet, fresh, and not heavy, even with (more) bread and cheese. It was great. They unfortunately ran out of the affogato, which probably would've convinced my husband to stay longer. Too bad. The vegan dark chocolate gelato from Farinella that they put in it sounded amazing. The beer was $10.50, my cocktail was $19, grilled cheese $16, and salad $17, which was pricey. BUT, the fresh herbs are from their garden on the back patio, they make their own soda and ketchup (among other things), everything was delicious, and even late at night the cocktails and dishes were still well put together and tasted great, plus I finally came here after so long. No regrets! Our server was super nice, same with owner and one of the bartenders, who even popped over and sat with us for a bit to chat. And not in a weird/creepy/in-your-face way lol she was cool. She was the one who greeted us when we came in and said bye to us on our way out. There's no flash photography (I forgot to turn my auto flash off for my salad, sorry!). They're open all week from 5pm to 2am, no reservations, no large groups, and no phone (just stop by). I wasn't sure if it would meet the high expectations and hype I had built up in my head after waiting so long to visit, but it totally did. It's such a nice spot, we had an amazing time, and we will definitely be back!

Drumroll please... Riviera -- Wow…read more This is what I'm talking about. Sexy. Sophisticated. Huge ceilings. Gorgeous bar. And a Negroni list with ten different versions. Don't miss Riviera when you're in Ottawa. We arrived an hour early before our third dinner guest joined us, so we started with a drink and a small appetizer. After several of my jokes fell flat, I told the waitress to just pick a Negroni for me based on what she'd heard from me so far. She nailed it. It was a slightly sweeter Negroni than the traditional one, with a hint of rosemary. We shared a dynamite tartare to start. Our buddy arrives and, without even looking at the menu, says: "You have to try a Negroni here -- they clearly know what they're doing." So I went for a second one -- this time a classic. Perfect. Next up: the seafood tower. Honestly, it felt like it had just come out of the sea. Razor clams, tuna belly tartare/ceviche on a mini salad leaf that was outstanding, plus lobster and crab claws that were spot on. A fabulous start. There were three of us, so we shared a steak with fries and a beautiful au jus, perfect gnocchi, and a salad with chicory, little nuts of some kind, and tons of shaved cheese -- Parmesan-ish. I can't remember exactly what it was because I'm writing this the morning after... and there may have been a few more wines involved. We finished by sharing a pavlova with passion fruit -- three spoons. I almost hate to admit this... but it was better than anything I've had in Toronto in years. Everything felt fresh, almost farm-to-table. Light, lively, and just a great vibe. In my opinion, Riviera is the perfect restaurant. Oh, and I added our waitress to my newsletter list because she wanted to try an excellent Polish water called Perlage that I think the restaurant should carry.
