Almost every city in France has a cathedral named Notre Dame, and the town of Rouen is no…read moredifferent. This big cathedral was heavily damaged during WW2 as the town is located not far from the strategic port of Le Havre. Any stained glass that is here is only here now because it was removed for safekeeping from bombing and put back after the war. Clear glass is seen at many of the top levels as it was too difficult to get to these areas to preserve the historic stained glass. Monet made several paintings of the cathedral also.

The roof of the church is an odd shape and apparently the designer left it up to viewer discretion to decide what it is. It looks like a medieval helmet to me. The church is located in the same town square, Place du Vieux Marché, that was in existence when Joan of Arc died. There are a wide variety of depictions of Joan of Arc - some pretty, some boyish - but apparently there is no actual record of what this young French heroine really looked like.

It does look like an over turned Viking Ship, or as interpret as the flames that was burning the patron Saint. The Church is built on the same location where St Joan of Arc was burnt in 1431. The stunning Stained Glass windows are from the Church of St Vincent that used to occupy the site till it was damaged in 1944. The architect did a wonderful job in incorporating that with the new structure. Free admission... always good.
